My story in education began with a single idea in college that I wanted to become a teacher. As an undergrad, I was an advocate for equal treatment of racial and ethnic groups. Experiences working with students with severe profound disabilities are what led me to pursue dual certification in Elementary/Special Ed. Today, I continue to advocate for equity and social justice in education. My journey shifted from teaching elementary and special education after I traveled to rural Cambodia to model literacy instructional strategies for administrators. It was from that moment on that I knew I wanted to return back to this part of the world, to share my passion for education, exploring new cultures and teaching. For the next year, I lived in Nakhon Pathom, a small province two hours west of Bangkok, and helped to start an English immersion program at a private Thai school. During my time in Southeast Asia, I found the opportunity to visit classrooms in different countries, to learn about students who did not have equal access to education, and to share my passion for teaching with others. Family brought me home to Hawaii. I was an EL coordinator and teacher at the school level, then an EL Resource Teacher at the district and state level, where I got to revisit my passion for sharing instructional strategies and supporting teachers across the state.Currently, I am a State Office Teacher for the Hawaii Teacher Induction Center under the HIDOE’s Leadership Institute. The Center’s outcomes are to improve student learning by accelerating the effectiveness of new teachers, improve new teacher retention, and provide opportunities for teacher leadership development. As a certified OCDE Project GLAD® trainer, New Teacher Center presenter for instructional mentors, Hawaii State Teacher Fellow, and teacher union committee member for teachers of multilingual learners, I am passionate about empowering teachers and students to be successful in the classroom. The messages I convey to teachers is to value what all students bring to the classroom and to be an advocate for those who may not know how to access their authentic voices. When I am not teaching, facilitating professional learning communities, coaching and mentoring teachers, or researching and advocating for policy initiatives in the public schools, you can find me adventuring in nature and doing yoga. I have been practicing various styles of yoga (Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga) for twenty years and teach hatha, vinyasa and aerial yoga part-time. I also enjoy hiking and adventuring with my two sons.
