Hi, Tanya Farrell here the Director of Maternity Services at Western Health. Prior to this role I was the Maternity Advisor to Safer Care Victoria and Chair Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity (CCOPMM). Previous Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Victoria.I am a midwife, and clinician, at heart and I truly believe that safe, high-quality care is possible and achievable and that by working with the woman and the whole team exceptional outcomes are possible.I work across teams and organisations to help clinicians deliver the very best, and safest, care possible no matter where they are. I do this by working with them to provide leadership, skills, tools, and techniques to help them design and monitor care and care outcomes using the latest in evidence-based practice.Having worked in Public Health all of my working career I am well aware of the issues both clinicians and organisations face in delivering safe high-quality care.My experience has led me to understand that there are 3 keys issues behind diminishing care outcomes for women:• Lack of education, • Lack of teamwork and • Culture.In working to solve these problems I look strategically at the structures and processes that underpin care. Identify gaps and provide solutions to those gaps. Identify learning deficits and provide opportunities to learn, and talk with clinicians and other team members to help them work better together.I am passionately committed to the provision of safe, quality care for women and their babies. I believe that providing safe evidenced-based care for women and their babies should not be an exception and that by working within good governance frameworks and respecting each member of the team this is entirely possible.
