Undergraduate Researcher In Computational And Synthetic Bioinorganic ChemistryWhitman College Apr 2012 - Sep 2014Walla Walla, WashingtonUndergraduate researcher in computational and synthetic bioinorganic chemistry, using biomimetic modeling and DFT to investigate redox-dependent structure-function relationships at the novel, bimetallic (Mo-μS-Cu) active site of the 277 kDa carbon monoxide dehydrogenase produced by the soil bacterium Oligotropha carboxidovorans. The reaction occurs under ambient conditions and is a major environmental mediator of atmospheric CO, as well as a potential proton and electron source for alternative energy technologies.Research focused on systematically developing, validating, and analyzing comprehensive, structurally converged QM models of the active site and outer-sphere protein environment (~180 atoms) in all catalytically germane oxidation, protonation, and electronic spin states.DFT calculations were performed primarily using the Gaussian 09 and ORCA 3.0.1 software packages and were correlated against measured electrochemical, spectroscopic, and metrical parameters from single crystal X-ray diffraction, EXAFS, vibrational spectroscopy and EPR/ENDOR to probe the viability of each state in redox interconversion within the core. -
