I am currently working as a basic grade medical scientist in MMUH. I have been trained on: MDROs screening (MRSA, CPE and VRE), molecular diagnostics(GeneXpert, film array, Luminex and Roche flow flex for CPE) urinanalysis bench, respiratory bench, fungi bench, tissues and swabs bench and blood culture/CSF bench. I am also part of the health and safety team as a H&S representative for microbiology since 2022, assisting in organising training sessions and completing Chemical risk assessments (CRA) and Risk assessments (RA).

I worked in the microbiology department of the Mater Private for 8 months. My duties included conducting SARS-CoV-2 tests during the COVID-19 crisis. The main testing platform was the Seegene for batch testing of routine samples with rapid testing done by GeneXpert or Eplex molecular tests. My other non-molecular testing duties included, reading and interpreting plates of various samples such as MRSA, VRE, CPE screens and urine specimens. Following interpretation, I set up antibiotic sensitivity testing and results reporting.

I undertook my research project in Immunology at St. James's Hospital, Dublin. My project was an evaluation of monitoring procedures in lymphoproliferative disorders and the application of the Daratumumab Interference Reflex Assay (DIRA). I learnt skills in auditing reflex testing procedures using SPSS statistics and excel for analysing patterns in testing. MY project also included practical elements like serum protein electrophoresis using the Hydrasys 2 analyser and the novel Hydrashift assay for reducing monoclonal antibody interferences (such as daratumumab, an Anti-CD38 mAb).

I worked in the Microbiology Laboratory in TSCUH for 3 months over the summer as a laboratory aide. While there I worked in the specimen reception, processing, culturing and testing of various microbiological samples.

I carried out my third year placement in Temple Street Children's Hospital laboratory. I rotated between biochemistry, haematology and microbiology, spending six weeks in each discipline. Whilst on placement, I was allowed to visit external laboratories such as the immunology lab in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the haematology lab in Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin for specialist areas. These visits lasted a week each. I completed the remaining disciplines of histology and transfusion at the Rotunda hospital.

Co. Meath

I worked at Tayto Park for the summer season of 2017 as a team member mainly trained on the Zipline amusement. I was rotated into different roles among the park, allowing me to vary my day to day. From this experience I gained customer service, mechanical safety and crowd supervision skills. My favourite part of working in Tayto Park was being part of the team.
