The discrete element method (DEM) is usually used to simulate granular material in engineering problems. In this case it applied to study the effect of drained cyclic loading which can be found adjacent to offshore wind turbines with monopile foundations or integral bridge abutments. DEM enables us to study the evolution of contact forces, energy dissipation, particle displacement/rotation etc.PhD Sustainable Civil Engineering - Imperial College LondonMSc Soil Mechanics - Imperial College London.BEng Civil Engineering - City University London.
