At the invitation of the Convenor of Design at Griffith University, South Bank Campus, I created and wrote the course and all it's assessments - a new elective 'Illustration for Design' - for 2nd & 3rd year VCD students.The aim of the course was to explore and develop the use of illustration as applied to 'real world' design briefs from brief to concept to finished art - as in the real world - through various mediums. Current Course Outline : 2524QCA 'Illustration for Design' -"This course introduces students to the fundamentals of illustration and investigates creative approaches to generating illustration techniques. Rather than beginning with illustrated outcomes, the course begins with experimental approaches to mark-making, using the mark, rendered in a array of materials, as a building block to develop gesture, shape, line and meaning. The aim is to encourage you to develop generative methodologies, using new techniques and media - creating styles and approaches that will be relevant and compelling in the future world of illustration. The course will also provide students with an overview of current illustration practices and venues, looking at character creation for use in animation and publishing, the use of illustration in fashion, murals, magazine covers, packaging and portraits and in operational diagrams and information systems. Students will use research methods to learn from the illustrative methods and conceptual approaches of current and past artists and illustrators. They will also explore how illustration works within design projects to create compelling messages. Weekly briefs will be provided on different media and techniques throughout the semester."
