Tara Murray is a justice defender, public advocate, and civil and human rights lawyer serving in the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the Office of Public Engagement. Tara joined the Biden-Harris Administration as a White House Fellow and worked in the Office of Cabinet Affairs where she served as a liaison between the White House and the federal agencies. Prior to her government service, Tara ran her own law office in Washington, D.C. Her firm's focus on racial justice underscored her commitment to people and communities most vulnerable to unfair and inequitable treatment. Tara is adept at developing and nurturing strategic partnerships in the public, nonprofit, and government sectors to champion the rights of the most vulnerable.Prior to starting her firm, Tara served as Deputy Director of London-based human rights NGO, Reprieve. There, she demonstrated her skill in building and mobilizing diverse teams towards common goals. She represented over 30 men imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay in federal district court proceedings and led the first investigations into the community impact of drone strikes in Pakistan – an investigation that expanded to Yemen and the horn of Africa. This investigation brought international attention to the community impact of the U.S. drones program in Pakistan and led to multiple lawsuits, investigations by the United Nations, and a U.S. congressional hearing. Tara's legal and advocacy efforts have been profiled worldwide by media outlets including CNN, the Independent, BBC, The Times, Al Jazeera, Le Monde, de Volkskrant, and Rai. She received her LL.M. in Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was an E. Barrett Prettyman fellow in the Criminal Justice Clinic, her J.D. from Harvard Law School, and graduated summa cum laude from Howard University.
