In July 2021, I got given the amazing opportunity to shadow a criminal defense lawyer in a high-profile money laundering case at the Southwark Crown Court in London. During my time attending the Court, I learnt a plethora of concepts about the legal world, such as the term 'mens rea' which is the Latin translation for 'guilty mind'. Out of all the things I learnt, as a student of philosophy this concept stood out to me as it outlines how when judging ones guilt, we must take into account what mental state they were in when they committed the alleged crime. This opportunity allowed me to exercise my confidence in communicating with others and helped me to expand my problem-solving skills.
