We also should figure out how to stop the input of plastics into the oceans and how to clean up what is already there.I have been told lately that I should capitalize on my creative non-fiction writing talents. Writer
CurrentIn January, 2019 I completed writing a book, The Great Navy Birds of Lake Michigan: The True Story of the Privateers of Lake Michigan and the Aircraft They Rescued. Reviews of the book can be found in the following publications:Classic Wings, Issue 112, Vol. 24, No. 4Homeland Magazine, September 2019Air Classics, December 2019Air & Space Smithsonian Magazine, January 2020 In 1942, the United States Navy began an ambitious project to qualify pilots for aircraft carrier flight operations. Lake Michigan, off the shore of Chicago was the location the Navy chose for the effort. Two former side paddle wheel, coal fired, steam powder excursion vessels were purchased and converted into makeshift aircraft carriers. Operating from Chicago’s Navy Pier, over the following three years, nearly 15,000 pilots were qualified for aircraft carrier landing and takeoffs. These men would win the air war in the Pacific theater and preserve the world’s freedom and liberty. During the Lake Michigan carrier qualifications approximately 130 aircraft of various types were lost in the lake. For many years it was thought that these magnificent machines of peace would be forever lost to time. In the late 1980s, a group of young men armed with little more than sheer determination, working on behalf of the National Naval Aviation Museum set out to rescue as many of the aircraft as possible. They would face overwhelming challenges of acquiring funding, the constraints of federal law, and malicious bureaucrats. They would find support from individuals and organizations, such as the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, the Boeing Company, McDonald’s Corporation, and Enterprise Holdings. This book tells you the story of the miraculous rescue of these aircraft from a watery grave to their presentation at places of prominence in museums and public venues throughout the United States.
