My career as an educator emerged organically but was no less surprising to myself and those around me. I began my life as a performer, participating in drama, before taking music lessons during my adolescent years. For my undergraduate degree, I enrolled in the faculty of music at Western University, with the goal of graduating as a performance major. As I was studying music, I developed a passion for helping others, which overtook my aspirations to become a performer. During my third year, I switched my career focus from music performance to music education, and have never looked back.After the completion of both my Bachelor’s in Music and my Bachelor’s in Education at UWO, I began my career as an Occasional Teacher for the Thames Valley District School Board in September 2018. As a supply teacher, I utilized my leadership skills, organizational skills, empathy, and knowledge of elementary pedagogy every day, to help the students reach their goals. Above all, I worked on building relationships with my students to understand their strengths, needs, and interests. Now as a long term occasional teacher, I work with a team of my colleagues and administrators to learn how to deliver educational content in a low socioeconomic school.Life-long learning is something that I am committed to, both personally and professionally, which is why I am also pursuing a career in freelance writing. Now, I am creating a portfolio which demonstrates my writing skills, to pitch larger journalistic projects. My belief as an educator is that you can’t “talk the talk” but also need to “walk the walk,” so to speak. If I am working to make sure that my students reach their goals, I too need to use my education and skills to meet my own professional goals.
