Growing up, my family moved about once a year. Every year I learned how to fit in with a new school, a new community, a new group of friends. These early experiences fueled a lifelong passion for inclusion, and they taught me a lot. I learned how it feels to be an outsider, how to fit into a group without losing myself, and how to make someone else feel included.As an adult, I’ve spent most of my career at one of the largest nonprofit medical organizations in the US. I’ve led, supported, or been part of teams of all levels and sizes, from the board to volunteer committees to staff working teams. My experience there has taught me a lot, too, like:• Nothing drives results as effectively as an authentic, inclusive team—the kind of team with diverse faces (that don’t all look alike), diverse voices (that don’t all sound alike), and diverse perspectives (that don’t always agree). • It’s hard to build that kind of team—it takes management skills, emotional intelligence, influence, empathy, courage, and a lot of trust.But I’ve also learned the impact that this sort of team can make on an organization, like when I led or supported the teams that:• Integrated a new set of cultural norms into the organization, producing 18 vital behaviors that set specific performance expectations and have become the foundation of the organization’s assessment and development programs.• Created six comprehensive orientation and training programs for volunteer leadership and committee staff that are used to onboard and develop roughly 200 volunteers and staff every year.• Increased the diversity of the Board and the pipeline that leads to Board leadership by supporting a team of six volunteer Board members and launched the organization’s inaugural member Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.• Increased member satisfaction while saving >$75k and >130 hours of staff time annually by identifying and leveraging a low-cost forms solution.I love being the glue that holds this kind of inclusive, high-performing team together, whether working to lead the team or in support of a volunteer chair.Let’s connect and talk!
