Chair Dame Judith Macgregor DCMG, LVO.The purpose of the International SAG is to provide advice, guidance and critical challenge to enable UKRI to deliver its international strategic framework. The UKRI International SAG will:- advise on the development of UKRI strategy- provide high-level advice on key international policy approaches- contribute to the evaluation of UKRI activity, its impact, contribution to innovation and further progressionBeyond this, the International SAG will act as a sounding board for:- UKRI’s plans and projects advising on research mechanisms and shaping ways to create fully equitable relationships with partners, while providing intelligence networks and channels to help ensure the UK academic community can promote and benefit from the changed research directions

I was recruited as the first Director and tasked with initiating, facilitating and helping to grow cross-faculty interdisciplinary research in energy and environment. The EEO developed and delivered strategic partnerships in the UK and internationally with academia, business and government agencies. We secured funding and resources for major projects that both supported the college’s academic mission and helped to translate science and technology to applications and products. During this time I was also appointed to the following positions; Director, AtlanTICC Alliance (Imperial, GeorgiaTech, Oak Ridge National Lab)Director, Energy Futures LabDirector of Development & Policy, Porter Alliance (a UK consortium for bioenergy)I served for 6 years as a member of the industry-led Renewables Advisory Board chaired the UK Energy Minister and served for 10 years as a member of Singapore British Business Council where I co-Chaired the Energy and Environment sub-committee.A particular pleasure during this time was to contribute to the successful bid for the London Olympics as an advisor on sustainability and S&T.

The University of Birmingham Dubai intends to become a regional leader in research and innovation activities. My role is to help establish high impact R&D projects and partnerships that are aligned to the UAE and wider regional strategic priorities and that deliver world-class research & innovation outputs to government, business and other stakeholders. The R&D projects may include our academics and researchers in the UAE and/or in Birmingham UK and potentially our partners and other parties globally.

I advise the company and CEO on science, technology, commercialization and strategy

Envision ALR is a private company that works globally to acquire high impact technologies, IP, and spin-outs/SME’s that address the global challenges facing societies and the planet – energy, water, health, urbanization, resource efficiency. We use our finance, knowledge, resources and work with universities and R&D partners to accelerate innovative step-change ideas through the technology development process to scale-able products and manufacturing. Core science areas are nanotechnology and advanced materials, industrial biotechnology, health systems with a focus on applications such as energy, water, chemicals and materials, regenerative therapies. My remit includes developing strategy for the core science areas, identifying and establishing relationships globally to acquire innovation and IP in those areas; Helping to generate specific technology development and business roadmaps; Identifying and establishing partnerships to place contract R&D to fast track the development process. The company has activities in Europe, North America, Middle-East and Asia.

I led the effort of a team of fourteen on developing a technology strategy and roadmaps for Masdar City that integrated innovation, knowledge management, partnerships and economic development.We established strategic partnerships with major companies to jointly develop and roll-out technology.

Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is a research-led postgraduate university established in partnership with MIT. My role at Masdar Institute was to help build and grow the university R&D activities and head-up and establish technology transfer operations and industry relations. I achieved this by providing leadership at the senior corporate level, developing strategy and building relationships with important stakeholders and partners in wider society, funding agencies, and industry both locally and globally.I was invited to be member of a number of major initiatives and Boards including;- Member of a high level national Task Force established by the Abu Dhabi Education Council on strategy and action for improving the education system from kindergarten to universities.- Member of a high level international Task Force established by the Abu Dhabi Government to review and produce recommendations on a national R&D Strategy and for a Science, Technology & Innovation Policy- Member of the R&D Advisory Board, Abu Dhabi Technology Investment Company and Global Foundries Inc related to their $12 billion investments in semiconductor wafer fabs globally.- Member of the International Selection Committee of the Zayed Future Energy Prize (2010 – 2012)
