Tarryn is a Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology) and Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) graduate at James Cook University. Upon graduation she was awarded the Jeff Clarke Prize in Anthropology. In 2025, she will commence her MPhil at JCU. Her research project will focus on working towards an understanding of the political ecology of groundwater management, particularly within the context of mining legacies and mine site rehabilitation practices in Australia. She is deeply interested in the political ecology of fisheries, the relationship between Western science and other ways of knowing the world, human-nature relationships, governance, and the anthropology of conservation and development. Her research approach is grounded in cultural anthropology, environmental history, phenomenology, and political ecology. In 2023, Tarryn spent the year living in Timor-Leste as a DFAT New Colombo Plan Scholar. Her year-long research internship with WorldFish primarily involved working within the Nutrition-Sensitive Fisheries Management project, funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). She explored the governance and management systems affecting gleaning and FAD fisheries in Timor-Leste, and contributed to the development of a novel nutrition-sensitive approach to fisheries management. She looks forward to continuing her focus on coastal communities as an early-career researcher, and is excited to explore visual anthropology, ethnographic filmmaking, and the multimodal dissemination of academic research. Currently, she serves as the Creative Director of a new personal project (Equatorial Field Notes) and runs a small-scale consultancy. Tarryn is a member of the Australian Anthropological Society (AAS) and the Association of Social Anthropology in Ocean (ASOA).
