Tested feasibility of integrating biogas upgrading and microalgal cultivation using hollow-fiber membranes.- Testing feasibility of delivering ammonia gas as a nitrogen source for microalgal uptake via membranes. Developed model to estimate ammonia transfer rates across membrane wall based on pH changes in solution.- Developing model to account for effect of non-steady state conditions on intra-membrane gas concentrations profiles during mass transfer. Model estimated the inactive membrane surface area during mass transfer allowing for membrane module optimization useful for scaling up from lab-scale photobioreactors to outdoor raceways.- Conducted lab-scale abiotic studies to experimentally verify developed models. Master'S Graduate Research AssistantSwette Center For Environmental Biotechnology, Arizona State University Apr 2016 - Dec 2018Tempe, Arizona- Objectives of research project were to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide, concentrate it, and deliver it to microalgae via membranes, thereby minimizing loss of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, and improving the efficiency of carbon dioxide delivery to the microalgae.- Developed a model to estimate carbon dioxide transfer rates and mass-transfer coefficients based on changes in pH when membranes were utilized for gas transfer. However, this model can be applied for any carbon dioxide delivery system provided a valid method for estimating mass-transfer surface area exists or can be developed. The model provides instantaneous carbon dioxide flux and mass-transfer coefficient values based on real-time pH measurements.- Developed a separate model to look at gas profiles formed inside the membrane lumen during gas transfer. This provides a microscopic perspective into the role of inert gases in reducing carbon dioxide flux and increasing mass-transfer resistance, and steps that can be taken to improve membrane module configuration to mitigate accumulation of inert gases inside the membrane lumen. - Conducted lab-scale abiotic studies to experimentally verify both models in addition to comparing membrane module performance under different modes of operation such as open-end, closed-end, and bleed valve mode. - Published a paper on model estimating carbon dioxide transfer rates in the Journal of Membrane Science. Provisional patent application for membrane carbonation technology was accepted. Working on publishing three additional manuscripts based on this research project. Show less
