While I was picking which major I wanted to pursue in college, I went to my Mom for help. I often think back on the advice she gave me: “Taryn, you may not have even consciously noticed yourself doing it, but you have been marketing yourself your entire life.” I asked her what she meant by that and she explained that I have always dressed to reflect my creative style, created social media profiles that express my interests, and even designed school supplies to show my personality. All of these little ways I expressed myself painted a picture of me as a person, which, in essence, translates to marketing. My name is Taryn Kenny and I am a senior Marketing and Emerging Technology in Business & Design double major at Miami University. Marketing myself is one thing, but my true passion is in helping other’s do the same. I have been able to work on a few marketing campaign projects through my time at Miami and in the professional business fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon, with brands such as KeyBank and Hollister. I loved these projects because they allowed me to tap into each company’s diverse business models and market them according to their unique brand messages, as well as learn important skills along the way. These real business world experiences that Miami University’s education has prepared me for a career in marketing beyond college. Already, I have learned the basics of both virtual and in-person business communication, entrepreneurial thinking, SQL coding, HTML/CSS coding, the Adobe Suite products, design thinking, and other important critical thinking skills. Due to the organizations I am apart of and classes I am taking, I have already found a specific interest in digital and social media marketing and am looking for an internship to learn even more about a potential career in that field.
