Using responsive classroom strategies, I form strong relationships with my students that focus on trust and respect. These relationships allow me to open doorways for important social-emotional and academic learning. I adopt school specific student behavior management protocols, while embracing PBIS, mindfulness practices, social thinking curriculum and structured movement breaks. I combine them to build students’ understanding of how appropriate behavior maximizes learning opportunities. I use coplanning time to develop cooperative relationships with other educators who interact with my students and maximize student learning by using existing knowledge to scaffold new concepts and abilities. This also provides opportunities to align the curriculum I teach with those of other subject areas, allowing me to make explicit connections between skills and concepts learned in my classroom and those learned elsewhere. It is inspiring to witness my students develop a deep appreciation for math and science’s presence in our lives while recording and exploring data kept on our Trout in the Classroom project.
