Colleagues describe her as "Ms. Thompson worked directly for me as a summer law clerk during the summer of 2015. During the eleven-week period of her internship, Ms. Thompson worked completely under my supervision, and I therefore had ample opportunity to observe her skills, demeanor and work habits. During her internship Ms. Thompson was assigned to a variety of research, writing, and compliance management tasks. For instance, she quickly mastered our internal processes regarding compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and developed her mastery of the underlying regulatory issues to the point where she was able to brief senior researchers within our organization on their legal obligations under these regulations. In a similar vein, she represented the Office of General Counsel in a corporate initiative to streamline and automate our internal procedures for managing foreign travel across the company. I received feedback from multiple stake-holders in this initiative complimenting Ms. Thompson’s professionalism, her keen eye for detail, and her reasoned and articulate analysis of the various technical challenges throughout the project. She also took over a stalled project to track and manage IDA’s legal obligations associated with post-employment restrictions on employees hired from the Federal government, and moved that project to completion. Because of the relatively small size of our legal office, Ms. Thompson was able to gain substantive experience in nearly all aspects of IDA’s day-to-day legal issues during her summer experience. For example, Ms. Thompson was able to take a primary role in an internal investigation involving fraud allegations, and prepared reports that were used to brief company management. Similarly, she participated in the preliminary stages of litigation preparation for a case involving employment discrimination, including participating in employee interviews, compiling responses from those interviews into memoranda, coordinating document production with outside counsel, and drafting the first version of a position statement to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Throughout all of her work, Ms. Thompson retained a positive and upbeat disposition, proving herself able to work well with even the most challenging of employees. Given the small size of our legal department, Ms. Thompson’s organizational skills were also an especially helpful attribute, as she was able to leave her ongoing projects in a manner that could be easily picked up by others. Throughout all of these projects, Ms. Thompson demonstrated her ability to grasp relatively complex issues, both legal and factual, and was able to work independently in reviewing documents, culling out important facts, and organizing those facts in a useful and readable way.
