I was a part of SAIYL’s Process Engineering and Business Development Departments.My key roles and responsibilities were:- Producing engineering design packages (Basic Engineering and Detailed Engineering) for projects.- Carrying out process design calculations and drawings for engineering packages.- Reviewing colleagues’ deliverables and calculations.- Executing solutions studies for Clients, such as abatement studies.- Procurement and technical adjudications for process equipment.- Producing Business Development documents (proposals and expressions of interest documents) for potential Clients.- SAIYL website pages development.- Author of articles on project experience and key Process concepts for SAIYL website.- Administrator on SAIYL LinkedIn page, tasked with creating content for the page.

South Africa

The vacation work was carried out over a 2 month period as part of the requirements to complete 3rd year Chemical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand. It entailed the study of the solid state reduction of ilmenite, as a stepping stone in the process of titanium extraction, using carbon black and graphite as reductants.The rates of reduction of both reductants were compared at the same temperatures of 1100 and 1200 degrees Celsius. Additionally, a quench test was carried out in order to determine the kinetic model of the reduction reaction. The thermodynamics, phase chemistry, particle size distribution and reaction kinetics were also touched on in the vacation work report, in order to gain a better understanding of the reduction process.The work was carried out at Mintek (Randburg) in the Pyrometallurgy Department, using the thermo-balance furnace and quench furnace.
