Most of the time I have been working on the enhancement and support of the main production application (up to 35 projects a year) of the company:• taking a sentence or a paragraph of the business unit request through the full cycle of the business analysis of the proposed change or new functionality, its potential effects, generating and validating business requirements and producing the most efficient solution in cooperation with the project stakeholders; • designing and developing new complex automated functionality for policy and financial modules of the production application like Tail Quotes (ask me about it), Copy All (I was a technical lead on this project), automatic addition/adjustment/cancellation of a medical society membership and discount records, splitting premium into multiple layers for reinsurance software and many more thus eliminating the need for manual intervention or processing;• creating new algorithms of calculations in cooperation with the actuarial department – as for a specific state tail rating outside of the rating engine that would blend the weighted premium based on the specialty/territory change of the risk over the life of the policy;• converting claims data of a newly acquired company from flat Excel files to the ProAssurance database tables by creating SQL Server database objects, stored functions and procedures, designing and developing SSIS packages;• using agile methodology (SCRUM);• creating financial and underwriting analytical reports to add to the reporting module of the application; finding the causes of and resolving our customers’ problems; writing test plans and other documentation; training new developers etc.

My career at ProAssurance started with my work (as a sole developer) on the database conversion of financial NCRIC data into PRA production software database structure, writing the scripts and doing the full migration. Itwas an enjoyable challenge of finding solutions for a different workflow philosophy. The conversion was a great success (being done on time and with fully reconciled data).Mostly I worked on the analysis, design and development of multiple enhancements of policy module of our production software, dozens of financial reports and maintenance of policy and financial modules with hundreds of work orders completed.We rarely know of the monetary value of our efforts to the company. One rare exception was the mentioning by the company actuary that just adding one line of business to one of the actuarial reports I created, saved the company $285,000 by eliminating manual effort of two departments.

$400,000 – that’s how much money my boss and I saved the company by performing the legacy database conversion to the new production software database structure. In a small company one does a lot of different things. I got to maintain the corporate website, perform Oracle DBA duties, interview, train and supervise new employees, publish Employee Relations committee newsletter, participate in the analysis and planning of various company-wide projects. My main achievement, my raison d'être however was the design, development, deployment and maintenance of the NCRIC reports application with 8 modules and 240 standard reports, most of which used Oracle stored procedures to perform at times complex calculations (for instance, following leading industry actuary algorithms for claims costs and exposure calculations – the corner stones of the rate generation). I was the sole business analyst and software developer for this project. Within this application I created tools to make up for missing functionality in the main production software (calculating premium layers for reinsurance, cancellation for non-payment suite etc.).To make the search for the right report easier, I published two volumes of reports' samples, organized by the department as well as a little brochure for the users.
