Assisted General Counsel on all legal matters in a variety of areas including patents, corporate, litigation, technology, data privacy, labor & employment, real estate, and international law in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. Conducted legal research and prepared memoranda, prepared and organized various contracts, updated and summarized intellectual property portfolios, and provided litigation support.

Worked directly with General Counsel on patents, trademarks, corporate, transactional, healthcare, and international law matters for a startup telemedicine company. Projects included patent analysis for technology and equipment, corporate formation and private placement memorandums, and international hospital projects in Turkey and the EU.

Conducted research with Biology Professor Chu-LaGraff. Performed neuromuscular junction dissections of Drosophila melanogaster larvae and larval locomotor assays to assess the effects of PPT1 knockdowns on embryonic neurogenesis and locomotor ability. The PPT1 homolog and palmitoyl-protein thioesterase 1 enzyme activity were investigated in Drosophila as a model for Batten Disease in humans. Anatomical dissections of neuromuscular junctions of Drosophila were conducted to investigate the molecular etiology of the disease, specifically the importance of PPT1 to post-embryonic synaptic processes. Since individuals with Batten Disease suffer from impaired mobility, tracking locomotor development in Drosophila would provide deeper insight into the human counterpart. Designed, directed, and performed my own experiments.

Conducted research with Biology Professor J. Stephen Horton. Developed an easy and efficient protocol for testing genetic diseases in canines, including myoclonic epilepsy and Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC). Designed PCR primers to detect different allelic forms of a gene involved in Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Demonstrated the reproducibility of a quick microwave protocol that enabled our lab to easily isolate crude genomic DNA preps from the fungus Schizophyllum commune for use in PCR-based assays.

Conducted research with Biology Professor LoGiudice. Researched fecal floatations to look for parasite eggs in the feces of wild rodents (white-footed mice, several squirrel species and groundhogs) as part of an investigation in ecoimmunology.

“Reduction of Soot Particulate in Automobile Cabins through Electrostatic Polarization.” Took the initiative to submit research on the reduction of soot particulate in automobile cabins through electrostatic polarization to the NSHSS-sponsored 2008 IBM Innovation to be Greener Competition. Research proposal won 1st Place. Invited to speak at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson’s Research Center, and worked with senior technical staff mentor Susan Malaika through the IBM Academy of Technology to continue research. Selected as a semifinalist for the 2009 Claes Nobel Academic Scholarship.
