Senior Student ResearcherUnion College Apr 2011 - Jun 2013Schenectady, Ny, UsConducted research with Biology Professor Chu-LaGraff. Performed neuromuscular junction dissections of Drosophila melanogaster larvae and larval locomotor assays to assess the effects of PPT1 knockdowns on embryonic neurogenesis and locomotor ability. The PPT1 homolog and palmitoyl-protein thioesterase 1 enzyme activity were investigated in Drosophila as a model for Batten Disease in humans. Anatomical dissections of neuromuscular junctions of Drosophila were conducted to investigate the molecular etiology of the disease, specifically the importance of PPT1 to post-embryonic synaptic processes. Since individuals with Batten Disease suffer from impaired mobility, tracking locomotor development in Drosophila would provide deeper insight into the human counterpart. Designed, directed, and performed my own experiments. -
