After working within the tourism and hospitality industry for more than a decade, I began the new decade (20-20) on a challenging yet rewarding journey into earning my Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure Studies. As an industry professional, I have held a few senior management positions in the US and Canada. I have spearheaded operations, training, and development projects with success and not without failures. Before joining the tourism industry, I have served my native country as an officer in Armed Forces, including as a United Nations Peace Keeper in Sierra Leone. As an educator, I bring my experiences to the classroom for the diverse group of aspiring professionals who keep me inspired every step of the way.My current research is influenced by past experience and continually shaped by challenges and opportunities around my chosen field, 'Leisure and Social Justice.' I tend to hold a multi-perspective view of tourism's potentials and vulnerabilities. Currently, I'm focused on the social power of tourism. With its inherent capacity to create a 'sense of place,' I firmly believe tourism can be the leading social force in promoting unity and integration. I think that human rights and social justice, two philosophical underpinnings of social work practice, should concern the entire society, where tourism, as one of the fastest-growing (now recovering) local-global communities, should take a more proactive role.https://dowla.academia.edu/
