Taye Tolera Balcha is a Senior Program Director at Big Win Philanthropy. Taye worked as a Health Program Team Leader at McKinsey & Company in Ethiopia. He was appointed by the former Prime Minister Hailemariam of Ethiopia as Director General of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in June 2016. Prior to this assignment, he served as a Chief of Staff to the State Minister at Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. He also worked at various levels of senior leadership positions in the government of Oromia region of Ethiopia, including as Deputy Head of the Regional Health Bureau, Regional HIV Team Leader and hospital Medical Director. Taye obtained his PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from Lund University, Sweden in 2015. He wrote his dissertation on Improved Methods of TB Diagnosis among HIV-positive Individuals. He received MPH from Lund University and MD from Addis Ababa University. Taye co-founded Grand Challenges Ethiopia, and co-established Adama Lund University Research Center. He has authored more than 70 peer reviewed publications and commentaries, and some have influenced policy and practice at national and international levels. Taye served as a Member of Parliament of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
