About Taylor Barron

I am senior mechanical design engineer proficient in additive manufacturing, finite element analysis (ABAQUS), computational fluid dynamics (ANSYS), design engineering (Pro Engineer, Solidworks), cost engineering (aPriori), metallurgy, tungsten carbide, coatings, composite design, and risk/uncertainty analysis. I am currently enjoying applying these skills to my day job at Schlumberger as a design engineer developing new products for the Extreme MWD group, doing FEA/CFD analysis, or failure analysis on new products we are launching. My career has bounced between true NPD roles, NPD-hiding-within-sustaining roles, and true sustaining roles. I enjoy breaking down problems, doing deep technical dives, working with other teams to see the bigger picture, knowledge sharing, and mentoring others. I enjoy expanding my professional knowledge about anything mechanical, manufacturing or industry related. When I really want to retrace my roots I’ll see what’s going on in the fields of trade off analysis, machine learning, and uncertainty bracketing. I found these fields exciting in grad school and I think they will play huge roles in the future of engineering. Feel free to reach out to hear more or if you just want to shoot the breeze about the future of Aggie football.

Received recent accolades for doing good work. Rewarded with more good work. Same position as before, just performing my duties with less hair now. Current work is seeing through the NPD development of MWD tools that are utilizing my FEA and CFD analysis. Performing general mechanical engineering duties like part design, systems review, manufacturing assistance, vendor management, failure analysis, and field feedback. CFD/FEA/Erosion modeling work was/is the heart of a multimillion dollar tool fleet expansion.

-Responsible for CFD and FEA analysis of downhole tool design. -Leader in 3D printing initiatives for site. Driver for internalization of manufacturing for 3D printing tooling.-Led tooling designs for the next generation of motors as part of new product development team.-Leveraged 3D printing technology to design innovative tooling that slashed quality control man-hours in half. In general, most of my time is spent tinkering in modeling software or running experiments on the manufacturing floor. In my spare time I enjoy chasing down previous designers of legacy products and interrogating them about their design decisions. Recently I’ve lead efforts to reduce part costs through greater understanding of part cost drivers and modeling design sensitivity. The cost modeling identified 3 million dollars in savings on just 12 million dollars on manufacturing spend. Currently I am leading efforts to redesign downhole power producing parts (pumps, impellers, etc) to more efficiently match tool power needs and fluid flow realities.

I taught students how to navigate through complex moral decisions they will face in engineering and in life. I encouraged students to think about what gives guiding documents like the National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics moral power instead of just taking each point for face value. We reviewed landmark engineering cases like the Columbia and Challenger space shuttle tragedies, the Ford Pinto rear end collisions, GM key ignition switch, and Therac-25 coding issues. We also discussed more abstract issues like how to identify and deal with bribery in international business, how group dynamics impact engineering, and how different approaches to risk create different engineering hurdles. Our hope as TAs was to create well rounded engineering students who had spent time thinking about what makes for a 'good life' as well as how philosophers arrive to moral conclusions. Easily one of my favorite experiences.

I designed & optimized complex pipeline repair systems using advanced 3D modelling software ABAQUS and python programming. The recommendations directly increased competitive advantage by creating lower cost and safer designs.

During the summer of 2013, I led diagnostic testing plans and developed design solutions for a product launch of a prototype server that created enough heat to warm water for radiant floors and driveways. This is a revolutionary departure from current server design which seeks to exhaust all heat as waste. Currently this server is in use at the National Renewable Energy Labs in Colorado. To manage overnight testing of over a thousand server temperature sensors, I created an Excel macro to visualize 2.1+ million data points simultaneously. When the schedule was in crunch mode, every morning I delivered the results of overnight thermal testing to the project manager, we discussed the next step in testing, and set up the server for more overnight testing. •The excel macro allowed us to identify trends and head off trouble spots that we couldn't realize without the macro. I submitted design recommendations that were crucial for the successful public launch based off of testing analysis.During the summer of 2012,I helped designed and built diagnostic tools to assist team engineers in commissioning of containerized datacenters to customers. I performed research and experimentation to support the latest generation of datacenters.
