UCLA Care Extenders is a program providing first-hand experience in a hospital setting and the opportunity to shadow medical professionals. My first rotation at UCLA Hospital in Santa Monica was in the Adult ICU and key skills that I gained in this department are the ability to think and act quickly and efficiently and the importance of learning where medical supplies are in the department to retrieve them for nurses and doctors promptly. My second rotation in Radiology taught me to sincerely listen to patients as most are in serious pain while in need of x-rays and to not be afraid to ask questions (when appropriate) of the medical professionals I am shadowing, as they are often open to teaching.
