About Taylor D. Ottesen
Although I grew up in the USA, my interest in global health began when I was very young. Through my travels, I started to gain first-hand exposure to the massive challenges to health care in various developing countries. Global health became even more personal when lost a close friend to a very treatable condition while running my non-profit organization in Southern India. I have since made it a career goal to never turn a blind eye to problems in global health. As part of this mission, I completed an MBA at the University of Cambridge with a concentration in healthcare strategy and social innovation. I have a passion for orthopedics, systems innovation, and access to healthcare in underserved populations on both a domestic and global scale. Prior to college, I founded my own landscaping company which I grew and sold and then completed a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Anthropology at Brigham Young University. During college, I spent several years abroad working in various medical and educational settings including the founding of my non-profit organization in Visakhapatnam, India. After college, I moved full-time to India to expand and scale the NGO while applying to medical school. I was blessed to be accepted at Yale School of Medicine and have since been focused on addressing disparities in medicine including abuse of Paralympic athletes, barriers to HIV treatment in high-risk populations, and expanding access to orthopaedic care to low-resource populations. In this role, I have had the opportunity to spearhead several projects in Ghana, Haiti, Colombia, Ukraine, and Guatemala. Now as a current orthopaedic surgery resident in Boston, I hope to further explore methodology and expand my understanding of how to apply innovative business principles to maximize surgical efforts worldwide.
