As an Exercise Physiologist at Duke Center for Living at Fearrington, a medical fitness facility, I have many duties as a member of the Fitness Team. I am responsible for conducting fitness assessments and providing individualized exercise prescriptions for members of all ages. I also work one-on-one with members in personal training sessions to improve on their personal fitness and wellness goals. Along with appointments, I instruct group exercise classes including strength, indoor cycle, aquatics, TRX, chair fitness, etc. Every other month or so I provide a wellness seminar to the members on varying topics from mindfulness to improving hand strength. I assist in administrative tasks at the facility such as equipment management and fitness software management.

As an Exercise Physiologist for the Better Back Care Program (UNC School of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery) I enroll and instruct patients in exercise classes that target acute low back pain through stretching and strengthening of the low back, hips, legs, glutes, and abdominals. The patient population consists of those with acute low back pain, no red flags (cancer, severe mental illness, etc.), and Medicaid and Medicare recipients. I am responsible for developing relationships with community centers across multiple counties to hold classes. I also assist in screening for eligible patients through daily diagnosis code evaluation. Better Back Care is a time-limited research study.

Human Performance Laboratory East Carolina University

As a graduate assistant in the Cardiovascular Risk Assessment and Testing Program, I performed preliminary health evaluations and graded exercise tests for local Police officers and Firefighters to assess cardiovascular event risk. I acted as a wellness coach/personal trainer for clients in the FITT building and East Carolina Heart Institute. I also instructed undergraduate students in EXSS 4805- Exercise Prescription and Evaluation Lab that includes teaching skills such as blood pressure assessment and body composition determination.

As a front desk attendant, I performed administrative duties at the front desk including memberships, after school care registration, financial issues, and assisting the Director of Administration and Communication. As a wellness attendant, I ensured all members were attended to on the gym floor/group fitness classes, and cleaned equipment and laundry for the facility.

I assisted in developing exercise prescriptions for phase 2 and 3 cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients, and in creating material for educational modules. I also monitored patients to ensure safe exercise. I was able to observe multiple cardiopulmonary graded exercise tests in the emergency department.
