About Ryan Taylor

In my role as an Embedded Hardware Engineer, I find joy in the intricate dance of diving deep into datasheets and meticulously crafting schematics. A circuit is like a recipe with a cup of resistors, a tbsp of capacitors, the perfect op-amp, and a heavy dash of SPICE (a little EE humor). I deeply enjoy powering up a new design, checking the rails, and programming its first words, “Hello World” declared along the UART. Each test confirms the design and any imperfections discovered are a chance to rewrite history and refine on the next revision. My journey has not been linear and has equipped me with a distinctive skill set for an electrical engineer. Retail management honed my ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and align a team towards common goals. My experience in sales has enabled me to present ideas or products in a compelling way to captivate clients. Past manual labor roles have prepared me for demanding work conditions and the necessity of putting in long hours when required. Through a cycle of trials, failures, successes, and learning experiences, I’ve cultivated a strong sense of self-assurance and humility. My career path has been unconventional, but my journey has led to being a profoundly thankful Professional Electrical Engineer.

Aspects of this position include:- Defining and refining product requirements for each design- Rapid prototyping new circuit designs to compare SPICE simulations to physical hardware.- Creating testing jigs to functionally test designs for production.- Utilized standard communication components and interconnection including CAN bus, Modbus, Ethernet, USB, WIFI and Bluetooth.- Commonly use SPICE to validate new designs and debug issues found in hardware.- Using Altium Designer for schematics and PCB Layouts.- Collaborate with our contract manufacturers to learn their processes and remove costs in product design from PCB level to assembled product.- Experience designing and testing products to UL standards- Created and managed documentation for testing and procedures.
  • Cbcl Limited
    Electrical Engineer, Eit
    Cbcl Limited May 2020 - Sep 2021
    Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
As member of the Utility Design Team I worked on a range of projects:SOLAR FEASIBILITY STUDY - A radar station was assessed to determine the implementation of an off-grid PV system, based on technical and financial feasibility. The variables that were considered during the technical feasibility assessment included: load profile, different PV panels arrangements, different operating periods for the solar systems (6 and 12 months), site location, adjacent obstacles that could cause shading on the panels, far shading issues, annual maintenance cost, and the total installed capital cost. HENDRIX TRANSMISSION LINE DESIGN – Designed a new 16.3km pole line using single and double circuit Hendrix construction at 69kV. Submitted several drawing packages that included route design, pole framing guidelines, bill of materials, sag and tension tables for cables and safety measures. Worked continuously with the client to adjust the route based on easement negotiations. Designed a 300m water crossing using fiberglass or wooden structures. GRADE ONE STRENGTH ASSESSMENTS – Power and communication pole line design and analysis to ensure conformance to CSA C22.3 No. 1-15 Grade One strength criteria at various sites across Nova Scotia, including highway, railway, and waterway crossings. This work involves a site survey, precise modeling of structures in PLS-CADD software, proposal of designs and structure modifications, and preparation of drawings and reports.
  • Glas Ocean Electric
    Electrical Systems Engineer, Eit
Glas Ocean Electric Feb 2020 - Mar 2021
    Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
*This project won the 2021 Lieutenant Governor's Award for Excellence in Engineering.*Glas Ocean Electric converted a fishing tour boat to a dual propulsion system, with diesel and electric propulsion connected to the same shaft while being electrically separate. This will allow Glas Ocean Electric to have a test bed for a completely separated electric propulsion system in order to do emissions and noise comparisons between the diesel and electric. I was contracted to integrate the electrical components for the electric propulsion system. In this role I:- managed the integration of all electrical system components- developed a system to convert CAN-bus messages from system components to Modbus (and vice-versa) for logging and controlling of the system from a central PC- worked extensively with our lithium battery manufacturer to integrate a 26kWh system, including acting as a technician to replace internal components because their technicians could not travel due to COVID restrictions.- programmed VTScada to control and monitor the system as well as display info on a touchscreen- created the electrical schematics for the communications and power systems- tested all components to understand their function and verify their communication outputs- worked through troubleshooting and integration issues of the system - learned marine standards for electrical components, wiring and safety- assisted in acquiring Transport Canada Approval for the electrical systems
  • Renewable Energy Storage Laboratory
    Research Engineer, Eit
Renewable Energy Storage Laboratory Jan 2020 - Mar 2020
    Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
I was contracted to prepare electric vehicle battery packs for second life testing and photo document the process in order to create a procedure for repeatability. Under the guidance of Dr. Lukas Swan, I performed the following tasks:- Removed the cover of the electric vehicle battery pack- Disconnected the onboard battery management system (BMS) - Adjusted the BMS wiring to connect the laboratory BMS- Applied thermocouples to evaluate temperature performance of the pack- Safely route the high voltage circuit from the battery pack to the cycler- Wrote a procedural document for the National Research Council In my time I prepared four battery packs for testing: Nissan Leaf – Gen 1 (x2), Tesla Model 3 - Standard Range and a Chevrolet Bolt. Each of these packs were unique and gave me a fantastic understanding of electric vehicles battery components and the safety procedures necessary to work with high voltage electronics.
  • Fundy Ocean Research Center For Energy (Force)
    Solar Energy System Designer
Fundy Ocean Research Center For Energy (Force) Sep 2019 - Dec 2019
    Parrsboro, Ns
I seized an opportunity to continue work from a previous co-op to install a remote energy solution for a relay antenna. A short-range communication system required a relay antenna which could only be placed in a remote location without available power. A solar array with energy storage was developed to meet the 24-hour load requirement of the antenna. - Expected solar output was modeled and CWEEDs data was used to find the lowest energy profile over any period in prior nine-year logs to ensure robustness of design- Energy storage was sized for overnight load draw and to account for capacity reduction during winter months, additionally a data-logger was included to verify system over time- System was installed December 2019, and communication system was verified. - This was a contract role that was in addition to a full course-load in my final semester
