Doctoral Candidate
Successfully completed a PhD on viscous-brittle deformation of shallow silicic magma.
Graduate Student Research Assistant
For my MSc thesis I worked in high-temperature deformation and thermodynamics laboratories investigating volcanic conduit processes on natural and synthetic silicic magmas. This work involved heating synthetic soda-lime-silicate glass samples and rhyolitic obsidian collected from northern Iceland to liquid conditions and uniaxially compressing them at controlled rates. The deformation resulting from each controlled strain rate experiment varied from viscous flow to elastic failure, corresponding with Maxwell's linear viscoelasticity model. From this research I gained proficient experience collecting and processing large data sets, quantifying theoretical concepts in the laboratory, working and collaborating with an academic research team, and writing a thorough and cohesive thesis describing the foundational knowledge, experimental procedures, results and interpretations of the work. The content of my masters project has since been published in Nature Communications (see link)
Database Assistant
My tasks included:Entering geological reports, maps, theses, seismic data, and well logs dating back to the 1950s into a digital database.Organizing the hard copies based on geographical location.Making both digital and physical versions available to EGI researchers and affiliates. Odd jobs for EGI researchers, such as: - Labeling minerals in photomicrographs and turning them into figures with captions in Adobe Illustrator for geothermal reports. - Locating seismic tracklines on area maps to correlate isolated seismic data on file with a reference map.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
I assisted Dr. John Bowman's Earth Materials II (Petrology) class Spring, 2013I was the Camp Manager at Dr. David Dinter's Geological Field Camp Summers of 2013, 2015 and 2018I assisted Dr. Mark Loewen's World of Dinosaurs class Fall, 2014
Undergraduate Research Assistant For Dr. David Dinter
Digitized a hand-drawn map of the active faults beneath the southern arm of the Great Salt Lake using ArcGIS, and categorized the faults into three relative ages.Analyzed seismic data of the Utah Lake floor and measured a massive tsunami-causing debris flow deposit in the north-eastern quadrant of the lake. Created an isopach map of the debris flow deposit and presented a poster at the annual Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) symposium. Research funded by the UROP program.
Outdoor Recreation Leader
I attended this camp for six years and eventually joined the staff team. It's an environmentally conscious youth summer camp which is centered around providing a safe, fun, and educational experience for both campers and staff while focusing on environmental conservation. Camper age ranged from 7-15 years old; camp ran overnight Monday-Friday for six weeks. My tasks evolved from support staff (kitchen worker, group hiking partner) to counselor - leading a group of 6-7 kids of similar age for the week. We would work together to create a song and skit to perform at campfire, set up and clean up each meal together, go on hikes and learn the local flora and fauna, and most importantly learn to successfully coexist with new and different people within a community.
