About Talise Baker-Matsuoka
I am a student at USC Viterbi School of Engineering studying electrical engineering and a law and technology minor. I began working at YokyWorks as a tutor, teaching cohorts of dyslexic children math skills, often using multisensory methods of learning and assistive technology. Taking this experience, I honed my coding skills by designing an interactive tool for dyslexic children that used the Milan Method, which attempts to correlate simple sounds (phonemes) with letter pairings that people with dyslexia find difficult. This exposed me to the world of intellectual property and licensing, as the Yokyworks team and I licensed the Milan Method from its inventor. At Yohana, I pursued an internship in data analytics, working primarily on a project that correlated customer satisfaction data with reviews, ultimately demonstrating differences in the way men and women communicate enthusiasm about products. I'm also an avid horseback rider, competing in show jumping! These experiences have led me to a growing interest in the intersection between data, engineering, medical/assistive technologies, and intellectual property law. As a voracious learner, I hope to explore these interests as deeply as I can.

Visiting Undergraduate Researcher (2024)
Researched the use of AI in diagnostics and radiology looking at national and international policy under the direction of Richard Dasher. Created a database of emerging startups using AI/ML to enhance medical imaging and diagnosis in various countries from seed to IPO surveying 75+ companies. Wrote a report compiling findings on future FDA and EU regulations on AI medical products, the possibility of model drift, and implications for insurance policy.
Undergraduate Researcher In Charm Lab
Designed a model and algorithm in C# representing a surgeon's hands palpating a patient's abdomen, integrating sensors placed on the user's hands and AR environment to determine the real-world force and torque of skin with high accuracy for surgical training. Implemented serial communication to control two haptic devices placed on the wrist and fingers to imitate the sensation of pressure while performing a spinal tap in AR simulation. Presented findings and algorithm improvements over previous methods during the final lab meeting.
Strategy Consultant
Worked on a team to produce and present a report consulting on the business strategy, organizational structure, intellectual property, and use cases for Blue Origin's Blue Alchemist lunar smelting module.
