I work with our product managers to help refine project requirements, and with our squads to ensure we can execute those projects. I enjoy collaborating with engineers across the department, and spend time understanding their challenges so that I can advocate for technical initiatives that will increase every engineer's overall effectiveness. I often embed with squads, helping to lead execution, and I still get into the codebase to ship features. I love problem solving with others, and find that the best solutions come when multiple perspectives are shared, tradeoffs are made, and everyone works towards a common goal. -
Head Of EngineeringRedox Apr 2017 - Jan 2019As Head of Engineering, I worked with our VP of Product and our CTO to define and refine the roadmap, grew our team from 15 to 30 engineers, restructured the organization into agile teams, and implemented our first career ladder, coaching program, and management systems. To grow the team, I had to scale up and formalize our hiring program to support doubling the team size. I worked directly with each squad to help remove blockers and find an operating cadence that allowed the teams to ship consistently. I defined our first tech lead role and ensured each team had a tech lead responsible for helping the team execute. I'm proud of the work I did as Head of Engineering, but it was never a role I wanted to stay in permanently, and I was happy to switch back to an individual contributor role when we found a suitable replacement.

For the first 2 years our team was small, and we focused on shipping features as fast as possible. I helped design the architecture, implemented our CICD pipeline, and built features to meet the needs of our growing customer base. Over time my responsibilities shifted from primarily writing code to helping grow and scale our engineering team, until eventually I took over the role of Head of Engineering to focus on those responsibilities full time.
