In 2013 I was tasked to change the configuration and brief of a 10 000sqm hospital to ensure compliance with new national regulations. The task entailed redesigning the Casualty and the first floor (5000sqm) of the previously clinical functions to offices. The challenge was that these changes were dictated by the National Health Department just before the site handover and had to be effected after the site handover. The risks were tremendous as the contractor had grounds to claim for an extension of time if they became aware of these deliberations. I successfully made changes to the building and issued the design drawing changes on time, as the contractor was setting up the hospital therefore not attracting penalties against the client.
