About Tyler Hoffman
I am broadly interested in the process of learning from data and building reliable knowledge that is reproducible and replicable. I study causal inference and machine learning techniques to find ways to do this. Importantly, these methods are often applied to problems that involve spatial data, where geographic concerns require different perspectives and techniques to accurately account for the complexities of spatial relationships. In order to best address challenging social science problems, I believe that it is critical to design statistical methods and programming interfaces that reflect how users most commonly frame the underlying concepts.In my career, I want to advance the principled use of (spatial) statistical learning for generating reliable knowledge in policy decision-making, to cultivate spatial thinking in (quantitative) social science, and to critically analyze the assumptions underlying computational research to ensure equitable outcomes.
