My research interests focus on investigation of mechanical behaviour of advanced metallic materials and processing for high value industrial applications (aerospace, automotive, and bioengineering) using synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction techniques, in-situ micromechanical testing (micropillar compression, nanoindentation), and microscopy techniques (SEM, FIB, high resolution EBSD, EDX). I am particularly interested in the fundamental question of how deformation of metallic alloys occur on the level of individual microstructural constituents, and the more practical questions of how the micromechanical deformation mechanisms can be applied to enhance the structural integrity of large-scale engineering components. Visiting ScientistEmpa Jun 2015 - Jul 2015Thun, SwitzerlandI collaborated with researchers in the Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials & Nanostructures at the EMPA, Thun. We investigated the local deformation mechanisms of dual-phase Ti alloys using combined in-situ micropillar compression and high angular resolution EBSD (HR-EBSD). -
Sr. ResearcherPosco Mar 2010 - Dec 2013Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-Do, KoreaI focused on fundamental research into metallurgical behaviour and deformation of steels (i.e. carbon, stainless, electrical) and components (i.e. weldments, cladding, piping), and also practical research of developing POSCO's own solid-state joining technique in endless hot rolling process to increase productivity, improve quality and reduce manufacturing costs compared with a traditional batch-type rolling process. These tasks allow me to enhance the knowledge of the metallurgical, crystallographical and mechanical aspects of steels and welds. -
Research AssistantUniversity Of Oxford Jun 2007 - Sep 2007Oxford, United KingdomI performed experimental studies to assess the relative performance of different coatings for Ti6Al4V in terms of the accumulated slip displacement under representative service pressure. This project was funded by Rolls Royce plc.
