About Heather Risley
I've had the privilege to work with over 1000 students over the 9 years of my teaching career. When I enrolled in the internship program in 2015, I couldn't have ever known that 5 days in I would be offered a classroom of my own. I've always wanted to be a teacher and I was presented with the challenge of a lifetime: teach math to 8th graders in an inner-city district with no experience and very little education. Almost a decade later I am at my second school and finding that I am a natural teacher and leader.I currently work as a middle school math teacher and a high school math teacher simultaneously. During the day, I teach 6th graders how to be successful in math. I thrive with classroom management, curriculum development, and mentoring new teachers. At night, I teach young adults who are learning English and the math skills they need to earn their high school diploma.Students usually come into math class feeling like math class is a place to survive, not to thrive. It is my goal to ensure that every student knows they can be successful in math by putting effort and curiosity into it. I ground my subject by teaching it from a real-world standpoint and having students choose how they want to learn. My classroom environment is a welcoming, low-stakes, high-achievement community, that respects the differences between learners. Involving myself in the community is an essential part of my teaching. I have the ability to make connections with students and families that enhance their ability and willingness to learn. I participated in and organized a variety of activities ranging from scheduling committee and math competition to the after-school program and the Nature's Classroom week-long experience. I made myself highly active and dedicated to so many pieces of school because the school community is an essential part of the village it takes to raise a child.Want to know more about me?
