- Managed due diligence as Project Lead or Assistant by negotiating and drafting contracts, reviewing title work, and coordinating Phase I ESAs, surveys, appraisals, and budgets for land transactions- Developed a 92-page Western North Carolina Farmland Conservation Plan by building a GIS model to identify target communities to develop partnerships and provide resources - GIS model was built to select for ALE components (prime soils, water quality, large acreage) - Shared model with partners to build RCPP capacity- Wrote, received, & managed grants - Produced GIS analysis for a successful $8million RCPP grant for Blue Ridge Forever partnership - ~$250k in additional federal, state, and local grants for land transactions- Analyzed potential forest land protection projects using GIS models to satisfy specific criteria regarding forest types, water, elevation, and proximity to protected lands- Cultivated landowner relationships to educate about conservation incentives

The Great South Woods Project is a collaborative, community-based planning initiative to enhance and diversify public access to the Forest Preserve and Conservation Easement lands in the southern Adirondack Park. Partners for this project include the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Park Agency, and the Adirondack Community-based Trails and Lodging System.- Conducted a Stakeholder Analysis to identify key communities, values, and attitudes surrounding resource issues- Facilitated community planning meetings to physically capture local knowledge on local and regional maps- Digitized data in a GIS database to map outcomes of resource use and envision future uses- Strategized proposals to achieve planning objectives, and provide agencies with the knowledge and desires of communities to increase transparency and influence planning decisions

- Evaluated impacts of acid rain on trophic interactions and soil invertebrates in a northern hardwood forest- Compared amount of soil invertebrates in an non-impacted forest to impacted and treated forests- Analyzed acid rain legislation to identify impact on forest ecology and local perceptions

Robinson Forest, Ky

I worked on two research projects. The first research project aims to evaluate the success of reforestation on reclamined mountaintop removal coal mining sites in eastern Kentucky as a viable means for ecological and economic restoration. We measure tree height and diameter of white oak and yellow poplar at 36 plots, within 9 cells, as a part of the Starfire Mine Reforestation Project. Each cell has a variety of three treatments. Treatment 1 is classified "Compacted" where the mining company compacts the soil as per usual. Treatment 2 is classified "Loose Dump" where loose soil is dumped atop the compacted soil. Treatment 3 is classified "Strike Off" where loose soil is dumped atop the compacted soil and then simply leveled. Trees were planted upon each treatment in 1997 and measured in 2005. I am returning to these sites to gather data, analyze the information, and confirm and project growth rates.Creating a viable restoration system for the desolate mountain removal sites provides the possibility of forging a more ecologically and economically secure future. This system can also be used as a model for regions outside of Appalachia suffering from similar issues.The second research project examines the effectiveness of stream-side management zones (SMZs) on stream quality in ten different watersheds. The first method of assessment used is the Stream Visual Assessment Protocol (SVAP) developed by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Next, we examine the geomorphological characteristics of streams using a Rosgen Level II classification system. Then we evaluate the coarse woody debris (CWD) at each location. The data collected from this project can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of SMZs on Best Management Practices (BMPs) in regards to various Kentucky industries. Utilizing data collected at these same sites in both 2006 and 2010 provides a greater understanding of how those industries impact Kentucky watersheds.
