About Ted Altschuler

Over 30+ years I have worked in nonprofits to champion the creation of new theatre, music, and multidisciplinary work, and amplify the voices of marginalized artists - integrating performing arts and community and connecting the public to culture. In my last position, I provided artistic/administrative leadership of the five-venue Baruch Performing Arts Center (BPAC) on the Baruch College campus in NYC. Through vision, influence, responsiveness to environment, and flexibility I led a team of 9 full time/20+ part time to create earned and contributed revenue streams, grow attendance 34%, and innovate a vigorously diverse season of programs across genres, featuring artists in residence. We programmed Venezuelan, and trans musicians, differently-abled dancers, Indian actresses, presented a Black Lives Matter adaptation of Fidelio, and a multi-national As You Like It, with actors from Sri Lanka, Liberia, Salvador, and elsewhere. Inclusion is a lifelong value that motivated my helping to create an initiative for the university LGBTQ+ community. Acclaimed premieres and work in development featured Blessed Unrest, Urban Bush Woman, Heidi Latsky, Huang Ruo, Caleb Teicher, Dipti Mehta, Jessica Bauman, Penny Arcade, and new music by Gregory Spears, Vivian Fung, Cindy Cox, Tarik O'Regan, Conrad Tao, Philip Venables, and Mikael Karlsson. Before BPAC, I served on the leadership teams of 2 nonprofits and consulted using my programming, fundraising, organizational, and marketing expertise. I’ve directed 40+ opera & theatre productions, created an approach to developing the talents of singing-actors, and coached actors both privately, at The Juilliard School, and at programs internationally. Many years of work with actors led to earning a PhD in psychology and neuroscience, deepening my understanding of human behavior and enhancing my analytic and creative capacities. My career evolved from educator and director to leading programs across the performing arts. Throughout my career I have engaged the public by supporting the creation of innovative cultural experiences.
