Dr. Blackmon founded Common Point in 2000, as a merger of ground-breaking technologies initially developed independently at NASA and Stanford University. At Common Point, Ted pioneered the market for virtual construction simulation, with introduction of the ConstructSim platform. ConstructSim provides a comprehensive environment to optimize construction projects through the use of a virtual model to support Advanced Work Packaging and WorkFace Planning, and was developed directly in the field to support the challenges related to work face planning. In May 2008, Common Point was acquired by Bentley Systems, Inc, a global software company focussed on sustaining the world’s infrastructure.

Dr. Blackmon founded Reality Capture Technologies in August 1999 as part of a NASA Technology Transfer effort, building upon his accomplishments with the highly successful Mars Pathfinder Mission. At Reality Capture Technologies, Dr. Blackmon led a distributed team of engineers and scientists from NASA Ames, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Carnegie Mellon University and the Department of Energy to develop and deploy a mobile robotic 3D imaging platform into the defunct Chernobyl reactor as part of an international remediation effort.

During the 1990’s, Dr. Blackmon was employed at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA in an innovative “think tank” in artificial intelligence technologies known as the Intelligent Mechanisms Group. In 1997, he was an active team participant in Mission Control as part of Mars Pathfinder, when NASA touched down the first robotic vehicle on the surface of another planet. The 'Virtual Reality for Mars Pathfinder' system developed by a team led by Dr. Blackmon allowed the mission operations team to rapidly image the surface of Mars in 3D and plan the activities for the Sojourner rover in a virtual environment.
