About Ted Harrison
Ted O. Harrison is the founder and president of Commonweal Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation-based community development organization located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since 2003, Commonweal has championed a 13,000-acre conservation initiative that will ensure permanent protection for more than 12,500 acres of an internationally acclaimed cultural landscape, known as the Galisteo Basin. In combination with public and philanthropic funding, Commonweal is financing the acquisition and restoration of the Galisteo Basin Preserve through the development of 300-acre, $750 million mixed-income/mixed use community, known as Trenza. Commonweal’s work has been showcased by the Urban Land Institute and the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. as a “path-setting conservation development of national significance.”Prior to founding Commonweal, Mr. Harrison served as a senior vice president and national programs director with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mr. Harrison’s 17-year career with TPL included a diverse array of project management, organizational leadership, and national program development responsibilities. Ted holds bachelors degrees in political science and anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Senior Vice President, Director Of Conservation Ventures
In collaboration with TPL staff and directors from around the nation, Mr. Harrison launched a national community-building initiative, known as Conservation Ventures. This national program was designed to promote a practice of conservation-based community development within TPL. Conservation Ventures staff engaged for-profit and non-profit housing, economic development, education, transit, social justice and youth development institutions in park-making and open space projects. Under the auspices of Conservation Ventures, Mr. Harrison also championed the design and development of a Geographic Information System (GIS) initiative, known as "Greenprinting GIS," that informs a more strategic and collaborative approach to park-making and community development in cities and towns across the United States.
Senior Vice President - Southwest Regional Director
Developed and led TPL's conservation program in a six-state region that included New Mexico; Oklahoma. In collaboration with the region's three state directors, Mr. Harrison advised and implemented a financially successful and strategically effective portfolio of conservation transactions and program initiatives throughout the Southwest. These included large-scale urban open space protection and watershed protection projects; as well as historic preservation and wild lands conservation work in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. During his tenure as Regional Director, Mr. Harrison aggressively marketed TPL services to senior elected officials, agency executives, state political leaders, philanthropic leaders, conservation organizations, and opinion makers throughout the region. His responsibilities also included management and development of a 35-person staff, strategic planning, budgeting, financial reporting and training. In coordination with TPL public finance and federal affairs staff, Mr. Harrison helped secure public financing for a $50 million portfolio of open space and parkland transactions in communities throughout the Southwest.

Initiated, negotiated, designed and completed a large portfolio of conservation transactions throughout California. Marketed TPL's services and capabilities to a large number of public agencies, land trusts, and community activists. Secured federal and state appropriations to underwrite the public purchase of high priority park and open space properties.
