Dr. Ted Leland returned to University of the Pacific on January 1, 2006 as Vice President for University Advancement and had an immediate impact as he reorganized the University’s annual giving operation. He helped secure the largest gift in school history as the University announced a $100 million bequest from the estate of Robert and Jeannette Powell. When the gift was received in October 2013, the Powell’s estate had grown in value to $125 million. On July 1, 2011 Leland was named Vice President for External Relations and Athletics. He reinvigorated the Athletics annual giving operation and PAF fundraising grew from $144,000 up to $475,000 by FY’16. Leland's greatest legacy includes a myriad of facility upgrades including a new Field Hockey Turf Field, the Raney Beach Volleyball Courts, Bill Simoni Field upgrades, Chris Kjeldsen Pool upgrades, and baseball covered performance facility. Additional projects include the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center and renovations to the Alex G. Spanos Center.Leland assisted President Eibeck in striking a deal to bring Pacific home to the West Coast Conference in 2013. The Tigers were one of the original members of the league formed in 1952, but left after the 1971 season.In June of 1991 Leland was named the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics at Stanford University. From 1991-2005 Stanford won 57 national championships, yielding Leland the distinction of having won more national college championships that any other AD in NCAA history. These championships were won in 14 different sports, also an achievement unmatched by any other AD in NCAA history. Finally, Stanford won six National titles in 1996-97, giving Leland the honor of having won more championships in one year than any other AD in NCAA history. As he continues a remarkable career, Leland has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of eight different organizations including University of the Pacific, Chabot College, Stanford University and Stockton Hall of Fame.
