A very fun change of directions for me. Hillsdale is a multicultural church, half is a Tongan congregation. I was in a Tongan church in Hayward years ago, but looking back, knew so little, this has been like starting over. The other half is the normal Bay Area mix of everywhere under the sun speaking mostly English. The last few churches I have served were born over a hundred years ago, with an average change in pastors every couple of years. This one is bigger than I have served, born in the middle of the last century and has had a wonderful string of great pastors serving almost ten years a piece. For the most part the "palangis" (not Tongans) are an involved, progressive and older group of wonderful people worshiping in two very different worship services. The Tongan congregation is the mother church for Tongans in the Bay Area, celebrating almost fifty years in this church, and worship mostly in a third service in Tongan.. They deserve leadership with more understanding and experience than I, but I love this mysterious group of folks who celebrate their life and faith on a different time line than I know and a very different way of relating to one another.
