It describes how Carl's memory has been tarnished by two incidents in which he was treated unfairly, once by people who manipulated the memory of Jackie Robinson to reflect better on themselves, and then by the Dodgers, who sought to release Carl when he was injured without properly compensating him. It also tells the story of the 1946-1957 Brooklyn Dodgers, one of the most memorable teams in baseball history."American Airlines, US Airways and the Creation of the World's Largest Airline" was published by McFarland in October 2014. I wrote it with Dan Reed, like me a longtime airlines reporter, although we are not related. The book details the histories of the two airlines, told by executives and employees, as well as the inside story of the merger, which brought together a young merger-obsessed management team and American labor leaders who believed their airline and their members would benefit."Kenny Riley and Black Union Labor Power in the Port of Charleston" was published by McFarland in March 2020. It tells the story of a black labor union in Charleston and of the union's charismatic leader, who combines the heritage of the civil rights movement with the power of the International Longshoremen's Association in one of the most important U.S. container ports. Four hundred years ago, black slaves were cargo in Charleston: now their descendants run the port.
