The culmination of two semesters of mentored research, I produced and defended a thesis surrounding the public funding process of Olympic athletes as well as the possible return on investment of such funding. The final 99 page product garnered international praise from leading scholars in the field of elite sport investment.Brief summary included below:Political economy studies of major athletic competitions like the Olympics or the World Cup often focus on whether all of the investment in hosting translates into economic gains or improved national image for the host country (Zimbalist 2020; Dawson 2012; Billings and Holladay 2012). However, this new study takes a different approach: it examines whether strong national government financial commitments to support Olympic team training directly translate into athletic team success, and in turn, whether successful nations also experience increased tourism following the conclusion of major Olympic competition. In other words, it explores whether medal success pays broad and longer-term dividends.This study is informed by scholarly literature on tourism promotion and government budgetary theory. It employs Olympic funding data (notably, SPLISS 2.0) to analyze this relationship using multivariate regressions. The results of this study showed that investment does translate to athletic team success, consistent with past work by Weber, De Bosscher, and Kempf (2018) and De Bosscher et al. (2019) employing SPLISS 2.0. However, I did not find support for the concept that Olympic success leads to a rise in tourism. Disruptions in the data patterns did suggest, though, that the effect that Olympic success has on tourism can often be overshadowed by extraneous global events, including the effects of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States and the 2008 global recession on travel patterns and revenue. Further exploration of dimensions of potential broad and long-term gains related to Olympic success appear warranted.
