My strengths as an educator come from my professional background, research interests and teaching experience. At UMB, I taught Strategic Management to undergraduate &MBA students and Research Methods to doctoral students. In addition to management, my teaching interests include human resources, organizational behavior, strategy, entrepreneurship, managing groups and teams and data analytics.WHAT I BRING TO THE CLASSROOM• After attaining an MBA from the Yale School of Management (SOM), I spent four years working in financial analytical roles at Standard and Poor’s and Harvard University. Instructor, Phd Candidate

Ann Arbor, Mi, Us

My Ph.D. research interests arose from lived experience as a Yale MBA management student and a Standard and Poor’s credit analyst during the 2008-09 financial crisis. Seeing scholars who could lay out in gruesome detail what was transpiring and then watching an organization react to a post-crisis world provided the motivation and foundation for my three streams of research: FINANCIALIZATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGNFirst, because the Financial Crisis and ensuing Great Recession stemmed from problems with financialization, I wanted to know how financialization could impact the structure of organizations. MAKING SENSE AMIDST UNCERTAINTYSecond, my own employer, Standard and Poor’s was devastated by both the scope of the crisis and its speed. In rapidly changing environments, our mental models may struggle to keep pace with events as they unfold. This led me to wonder what process organizations can take in order to make sense of and react to highly dynamic situations. TECHNOLOGY & WORK DESIGNFinally, the financial innovations at the core of the crisis were, in part, technological innovations. Rising power and declining cost in computing systems made it possible to run the Monte Carlo simulations and Gaussian copula formulas needed to evaluate and structure large pools of risk. Technological advances also changed both the type of work and the kind of worker needed in investment banks. Physicists and computer scientists all of a sudden had the ideal skills to work in finance. This led me to wonder how technological advances intersect with job and work design. My dissertation, was a part of this third research stream. I also taught an 81-student undergraduate organizations survey course, for which I received top ratings. I was a teaching assistant for several graduate level classes across the management discipline with topics including: general management, human resources, groups and teams, and interpersonal dynamics.

Icos Big Data Camp – Program Leader

Ann Arbor, Mi, Us

In each of the summers from 2016-2018 at Michigan Ross, I organized and led a week-long intensive workshop called ICOS Big Data Camp, which introduced graduate students to computational tools and big data analytics. As organizational life continues to move online, it is tracked through various electronic media, such as websites, platforms, and social networks. The ability to analyze the large-scale datasets generated by this digital activity is now a necessary skill for social scientists. To ensure that students are prepared, I designed, organized, and led a week-long intensive workshop in big data and computational methods for PhD students, introducing students to Python, SQL databases, the command line, and Python packages such as pandas, Beautiful Soup, Gensim and NLTK. While the first ICOS Big Data Camp occurred in 2013, from 2016-2018 I restructured and redesigned it to be:COMPREHENSIVEI led the expansion of the camp’s material offerings to include text analysis, Map/Reduce, pandas and MatplotlibRESEARCH-FOCUSEDI brought in researchers and campus experts to demonstrate the potential of computational tools in various research use cases.REPLICABLEThe camp format and materials have been carefully refined. I can now bring this course to social science PhD students anywhere. I could also modify it to be part of an MBA “math camp,” or adapt it into a half-semester course for MBAs or undergraduates.Everyone can learn and use these tools. And it can be a lot of fun! If you’d like your students, workers, or community members to get familiar with computational tools, please contact me. I would love to talk with you about teaching Big Data Camp as a workshop or structuring it to fit whatever your needs might be. I can be contacted here. Also, please look at the Big Data Camp website or examine the GitHub repository from the 2018 camp for sample code downloads.https://icosbigdatacamp.github.io/https://icosbigdatacamp.github.io/2018-summer-camp/
