  • Say Media
    Senior Editor, Readwriteweb
    Say Media May 2012 - Oct 2012
Founded in 2003, ReadWriteWeb chronicled the transformation from simple web pages to online applications that became known as Web 2.0. Today, a new transformation is taking place as pervasive networks — cloud, social, mobile — upend established powers and create new opportunities for innovation and growth. RWW founder Richard MacManus and business chief Kourosh Karimkhani, who have since departed, brought me aboard to make that message resonate in every article. With colleagues Fred Paul and Abraham Hyatt, I focused on breaking news, sharpened the reporting and analysis, and honed headlines to make the network revolution palpable (and clickable). I brought in writers to cover the transformation in arenas like politics, sports, and travel. To spur engagement, I coached writers to develop a personal, opinionated, controversial style. Our efforts were rewarded with steadily rising pageviews and comments.
  • Pcworld|Macworld Content Works
    Content Director
    Pcworld|Macworld Content Works Jun 2010 - Sep 2011
What a year! 160 content plans written, 30-odd custom projects sold to clients including AMD, Cisco, Dell, Fujitsu, Intel, Microsoft, Samsung, Sprint, and Toshiba. I launched PCWorld|Macworld's custom content division and produced hundreds of articles, videos, web sites, and interactive units for consumer, small business, and enterprise markets. (Kudos to the amazing sales and operational staff, Chris Manners' video production skills, and some of the best tech journalists in the biz.) My approach was to deliver the highest possible value to the audience while supporting the client’s aims. Result: A win-win for consumers and marketers.
  • Wired
    Senior Editor
    Wired Jan 2000 - Oct 2009
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
I arrived at Wired determined to become a world-class editor. The organization's drive to innovate and commitment to excellence, along with a stellar team of colleagues, pushed me to come up with ever more daring ideas across a range of subjects: tech, business, science, medicine, culture, politics, economics. Working with brilliant writers like Bruce Sterling, Kevin Kelly, George Gilder, Clay Shirky, Gregg Easterbrook, and Spencer Reiss — even Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren! — I produced compelling general-interest stories while continually pushing the limits of print and online presentation. During my tenure, Wired won three National Magazine Awards and numerous online awards, culminating with Ad Age's Magazine of the Decade. Personal highlights: • "Cutthroat Capitalism" by Scott Carney distilled the economics of piracy on the high seas into a set of simple equations. http://www.wired.com/politics/security/magazine/17-07/ff_somali_piratesOnline, we empowered readers to apply the pirate formulas in a video game. http://www.wired.com/special_multimedia/2009/cutthroatCapitalismTheGame• The Placebo Crisis: The placebo effect appears to be growing, mysteriously drowning out the effects of new drugs in pharma trials. I did the conceptual spadework and a bit of initial reporting. Steve Silberman did a brilliant job with the rest. Selected for Best Technology Writing 2010, (Yale University Press).http://www.wired.com/medtech/drugs/magazine/17-09/ff_placebo_effect?currentPage=all• My interview with Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner, was accompanied online by a gorgeous interactive, multithreaded timeline of the film's forerunners and progeny.http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/magazine/15-10/ff_bladerunner• Geekipedia, a print one-shot encyclopedia of bleeding-edge ideas, personalities, companies, and products, was sponsored by Intel. I managed a huge team of writers to pack the book with surprises that make each entry jump off the page.
  • 3D
    Editor In Chief
    3D Dec 1998 - Jan 2000
It was especially rewarding take charge of 3D at a moment when its market was becoming vastly more competitive. Collaborating with publisher Bob Melk, I refocused the staff on delivering inspiring, high-impact information for 3D artists working in print, video, and interactive settings. I was responsible for communicating the mission to sales and marketing, as well as the organizers of the annual 3D Conference. Along the way, I architected, staffed, and launched the 3Dgate.com web site.
  • Interactivity
Senior Editor -> Editor In Chief
    Interactivity Jun 1995 - Oct 1998
Jonathan Nelson, now digital CEO at Omnicom Group, gave me my first glimpse of Netscape Mosaic in 1995, and it changed my life: I had to join the digital revolution. I moved to InterActivity to be on the front line. When I started, the dominant medium was CD-ROM; by the time I left, it was the web. In between, we helped define interactive media and galvanized the developer community. I took the reins when editor-in-chief Dominic Milano graduated to group publisher.
  • Musician Magazine
    Senior Editor
    Musician Magazine Apr 1993 - Jun 1995
This position—initially filling two pages monthly—was a sop to the ad salespeople because Musician was about music, not hardware. My page count grew steadily to 12-plus as I instituted monthly spreads that highlighted emerging technologies like home recording, then worked in feature articles on vital tech-related issues, and ultimately took charge of one-shot publications. I was offered the editor-in-chief position, but moved to InterActivity instead.
