Co-led the integration of Medical School and Hospital IT into a 900 person, $158M operating budget shared services organization supporting patient care, research, and education. Championed strategic initiatives including expanding data governance across all three missions, establishing a university-wide identity and access management program, and defining an integrated campus voice-over-IP strategy. Michigan Medicine, encompassing the Medical School and Hospitals and Health Centers, is a $4.9B enterprise with 2.3M patient visits/year, 1,000 hospital beds, and 30,000 employees.

Provided primary and highest level operational and strategic leadership for the Medical School’s information and communications technology functions, encompassing applications development, clinical/translational research informatics, analytics, operations, instructional design, classroom a/v, web development, and applied research and development. The Medical School had total revenues of $1.5 billion in FY17 (including $591M in sponsored research awards), 719 medical students, 1,206 graduate students and postdocs, 3,578 faculty, 1,422 house officers, and 4,078 staff.• Developed the business case for the CIO role and negotiated the restructuring of eight separate units into a new organization of ~200 FTE, operating budget over $22 million, and a capital budget of $6 million. Through consolidations reduced overall FTEs while raising service levels.• Conceived, proposed, and saw through to success a unified IT service desk for Michigan Medicine, providing a user-centered “one number to call” for assistance.• Closed data centers and integrated applications and infrastructure services into primary campus data centers and cloud platforms, achieving several hundred thousand dollars in annual savings.• Negotiated the Box cloud storage contract on behalf of U.S. higher education as part of a small, inter-university team representing Internet2 Net+, resulting in unlimited storage at a fixed cost.

Directed the application of leading-edge information and communications technologies to enhance the school’s missions, enabling new modes of curriculum delivery and augmenting research capabilities. Conceived, created, and taught “CIS342: Information Networks for Modern Organizations,” exclusively using openly accessible online materials and electronic presentations. This Computer and Information Systems concentration core course covered technology and business opportunity fundamentals for data, voice, and video networking. The major course project involved creating a simulated business presence on the Internet.
