About Ted Leonhardt
Like all creatives, I’ve always been more motivated by the work than the money. But over a long career providing creative services to corporate clients, I’ve learned how much value creatives provide and should be compensated for. Today I use that knowledge to help creatives all over the world deal with difficult issues like negotiations. Over the last couple of years I've returned, in part, to my creative roots. By creative roots I mean writing and illustrating a fictional serial novel set in the near future. As of today, 3/25/20, I've written 26 chapters and deeply into writing chapter 27. You can find the serial on my blog at ted leonhardt.com.https://tedleonhardt.com/category/co-op-serial/?submit=Go I became an advisor to creatives after a long career in design. You might ask, why the shift? And the answer is that something was missing. It may have seemed like I was professionally fulfilled, but I wasn't – in spite of my success. A quick career summary: I started as an illustrator in an in-house design group, then worked for a design consultancy before starting my own firm, which grew steadily over many years. I sold The Leonhardt Group after it reached $10 million in fee sales and had a staff of 50; I stayed on for the new owners as Chief Creative Officer. In that position I was based in London, and was responsible for something like 500 creatives in 27 offices worldwide. Next I spent a couple years helping a group of investors buy design firms. It was while acquiring independent creative firms that I began to realize I was on the wrong side of the table. I wasn’t helping the creatives I know and love ¬– just investors who were only interested in financial returns. I have no problem with people making money from creative expertise. I do have a problem with people who treat creatives solely as financial instruments – as widgets on an assembly line.I’ve made many changes since I realized something was missing in my life. I’m much happier, I’m writing almost every day and I have a busy practice helping both individuals and small groups.Today I focus solely on making it possible for creatives to thrive. I live in Seattle, where my office is aboard the De Anza III, a lovely all-wood motor yacht. De Anza was built just north of Vancouver, Canada, by the Western Craft boatyard. They launched her in 1959.

Publisher
CurrentNAIL’s mission is to look at the lives of creatives in the world. We’re interested in how talented, committed, empathetic people get through the day. How we survive and, more than that, thrive, looking beyond to greater ambitions and desires. We’re in a moment of incivility. Visceral and psychic violence. Information bombardment and fake news. And the post-truth culture of Donald Trump. The NAIL team firmly believes that addressing these issues will make the world a better place.NAIL was published once and sold online and through 10 bookstores in Seattle and Portland.
Contributing Writer
CurrentI've written many articles for Fast Company Leadership. Its is a daily online newsletter that reaches career minded professionals. Readership tends to be young and includes many in the creative professions who are charting their careers in a moment by moment manner. I'm proud to provide help and advice based on my own career, life experience and my ongoing work with consulting clients.
Lecturer
CurrentI'm proud to be on the board and an a occasional instructor and guest lecturer at SVC. The founders of SVC Dick and Cherry Brown were my illustration teachers at the Burnley School of Professional Art prior to creating SVC. I've always believed in the school's mission and vision. The fundamental spirit of helping creatives become more successful in their work and lives has always been core to the school's mission and is central to my own work as well.
President
Anthem Worldwide was the design arm of Schawk when I took a contract position with Schawk to help acquire additional design offices in the US, UK and EU. That role evolved into the position of President as my duties widened into growing and improving the existing design offer. Anthem designers are expert in branding and packaging design in the fast-moving world of food, beverage and consumables.
Chief Creative Officer - Global
My position as Chief Creative Officer at Fitch evolved out of a series of acquisitions that began with the sale of my firm The Leonhardt Group to a group of Chicago investors in 1999, operating under the name Lighthouse Global Network. Fitch had also been acquired by Lighthouse. In 2000 Lighthouse sold to Cordiant Communications Group. I was hired by Cordiant to be Chief Creative Officer of their design offices and led the name change to Fitch Worldwide.
Founder And Ceo
A Seattle branding agency with a client roster including Nissan, Nordstrom, Charles Schwab, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, and more. The Leonhardt Group had 40+ employees and $10 million annual fees when we sold it to a group of Chicago investors who had purchased Fitch, Primo Angeli and several other design firms.
