I've always wanted to be a writer. When I was in school, I wrote stories about spaceships instead of doing my homework. I thought that meant when I grew up I wanted to write fiction for a living. Mostly because at the time I had decided that I hated other people, didn't understand them, and just wanted to be alone. Writing was infinitely more fun, I was a damn genius at it, and I didn't need anybody else to do it.Well, I'm all grown up now. I've been a web content writer, a video games writer, an advertising copywriter, a technical writer, and I've also had some short stories and even a novel or two published. One of the lessons I've learned along the way is that writing isn't really all that fun when you get down to it. It's actually quite frustrating to learn twenty years later that you're not quite the genius writer everyone back in school kept saying you were. It's been a very humbling experience. Painful, but humbling. The other lesson I learned is that it turns out I don't really hate other people, and while I still don't quite understand them, I think I can understand a lot of their underlying frustrations.Apparently this makes me a good manager? Not my words. Just what the writers in the team I lead at Setel have told me during our 1-on-1 sessions. And I have to admit, helping other writers in their professional careers is actually quite fun and satisfying.Am I patting my own back? I suppose so. And if I'm going to be patting my own back, that's probably the reason I'd choose 'cause my less-than-stellar efforts in writing definitely won't be.
