In my 30+ year career in the financial services industry, I have been an insurance agent, a marketing representative, a regulator and a home office compliance officer.I have been a key contributor to MassMutual’s compliance department since January 1998. I was hired to manage the advertising review team, the company’s first attempt at combining personnel from its then separate insurance and broker/dealer compliance departments (and cultures). The team’s success led to merging the rest of the departments’ compliance personnel and responsibilities in October 2000, when I was asked to manage the agency inspection team. In March 2003 I started managing our newly-formed education team, which provided compliance training for agents, agency supervisors and home office associates. In June 2010, I returned to managing the advertising review team when its manager retired.Since 2015, after the advertising review function was decentralized, I have been primarily responsible for reviewing advertising relating to the company’s digital and direct-to-consumer initiatives. I have also represented and championed MassMutual’s compliance efforts in industry and regulatory forums, and have been a member of FINRA’s Public Communications Committee since its inception in 2015.Prior to joining MassMutual, I spent ten years with the NASD (now FINRA) Advertising Regulation department. I supervised analysts who reviewed advertising of broker/dealers for compliance with NASD and SEC advertising standards. I also hired and trained new and experienced analysts, conducted investigations of deficient sales material, and assisted the department’s director in setting policy and goals.In 1984, I started my career as a marketing representative for The Travelers Insurance Company, which trained me extensively in securities and life and health insurance products and services. Before joining the NASD in December 1987, I spent 18 months with a community savings & loan initiating a program to market insurance and annuities to its branch customers.I live in West Hartford, Connecticut with my wife Ronni and our two children.
