Managing Director & Global Compliance Director
New York, New York, United States
I am the Global Compliance Director for Legg Mason, Inc, responsible for global distribution, mutual fund, and corporate compliance. I also serve as CCO for four US-registered mutual fund families. We monitor the adequacy of controls of LM’s nine owned investment affiliates, each of which maintain their own compliance teams. I supervise 50 Legg Mason compliance staff in eleven cities across eight countries. The team supports mutual fund compliance for more than 300 funds across six locations, and the sale of those funds in more than 30 countries. We also support multiple mutual fund boards, and oversee the compliance and control activities of the sub-advisors, both LM affiliates and third-party. We provide compliance support for ETFs in the US and Australia, and for the ActiveShare semi-transparent ETF structure. Some key aspects of my position are:- Supporting the LM “no chalk” culture - through training, reminders, and working in partnership with global distribution and affiliates to sustain a vibrant control structure. - Identifying risk - our goal is to pre-empt regulatory and control issues by looking ahead to anticipate new risks and conflicts from alternative products and changes in regulations and regulator priorities- Driving innovation in compliance - identifying new ways to protect LM (e.g, first US company certified under the ISO 37001 anti-corruption standard, development of a compliance analytics team to automate trading reviews) and operate effectively (e.g., lean six sigma kaizens to streamline compliance processes)- Representing compliance to boards and regulators, and on numerous committees - co-chair Americas Risk Oversight Committee, and as a member of new product and various other control committees, including money market risk- Team building and talent development - supporting a diverse and inclusive team, and encouraging personal development through personal goals, one-on-one development discussions, and learning opportunities
