The 1493 Project

Vancouver, British Columbia

The 1493 Project™ leads accelerated collaborative conservation strategies and tactical grassroots programs to guide every community into being resilient & sustainable.Using fair-market dynamics, our goal is to set into motion an organically forming set of actions that will give people easier access to information, products, and services so they can more effortlessly choose to participate in a sustainable economy. The 1493 Project embraces communities as the centre of these fundamental economic activities. If you want to stimulate neighborhood growth and cohesion, you're a lot better off starting with stuff people eat and drink. Movie theaters, outside restaurants, special events are all great. But where people really want to go is to find places to eat and drink, and to interact with others in these settings.1493 focuses on a single physical ‘place’ where hyper-local behavior can influence community dynamics through growing and eating food. By developing shared gardens and urban farmer, and building micro-innovation centres we create new sustainability concepts proposed by any community age group. 1493 will be sustained with a social media space (the 1493 Platform) where people can come together, collaborate, test, experiment, share across activities, and compete and track activities and individual projects in real time in a virtual marketplace of ideas.

New York And Connecticut

The New York – Connecticut region, which includes New York City, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley, and the coastal region of Connecticut stretching from Stamford to New Haven, faces a unique set of opportunities and challenges as it strives to meet sustainability goals. By most measures, this is the most economically productive, energy efficient and transit oriented metropolitan area in the United States. With more than 14 million people and nearly $800 billion in economic output, the region includes a diverse set of living choices that spans the densest urban core in the nation and a network of smaller cities and suburban communities. This Partnership is committed to advancing six overarching Livability Principles as a framework to help American families gain better access to affordable housing, more transportation options and lower transportation costs, while protecting the environment and reducing our energy dependence. The Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program will support metropolitan and multijurisdictional planning efforts that integrate housing, land use, economic and workforce development, transportation and infrastructure investments in a manner that empowers jurisdictions to consider the interdependent challenges of these issues specific to their region. The anticipated outcomes of the grant program will be a generation of regional plans that address these integrated issues and illustrate how federal resources will be aligned to mirror local and regional strategies for achieving inclusive, sustainable communities.
